His Holiness the Dalai Lama emphasizes that the Buddhist approach to spiritual growth mainly involves using our human intelligence to overcome the destructive emotions, source of all problems for ourselves and others. Using this intelligence we can discover for ourselves that these destructive emotions—such as hatred, greed, jealousy and so forth—arise as the result of our mind’s having fallen under the influence of a distorted view of reality. The most effective way of dealing with these problems is therefore to look inwards, identify what kind of view is dominating our mind, correct whatever mistaken view we discover, and replace it with an attitude that is wholesome and realistic. This entire process is called “thought transformation” or “mind training.”

Over four weeks in September, the Namdrol Ling Study Group will host a course in mind training taught via Skype by Jon Landaw, a long-time student of Lama Yeshe and Kyabje Zopa Rinpoche. The aim of this course is to share effective methods we can begin to practice right now to reduce and eventually overcome the negative effects of our destructive emotions. Although some background in the theory of mind training will be given, the main emphasis in this course will be on getting a taste of the actual experience of thought transformation.
